Streamlined merchandising and inventory operations help enable continued expansion

As retailers manage an increasingly complex array of customer segments and channels, success hinges on simplifying and optimizing mission-critical operations such as pricing, inventory management, and allocation. For premier sports, outdoor, and lifestyle retailer Academy Sports + Outdoors, the 2014 implementation of Oracle Retail solutions is significantly reducing the time needed for key allocation tasks and is promising even more widespread benefits as the company deploys additional optimization tools.
Academy Sports + Outdoors implemented Oracle Retail solutions to support expansion with a mature, proven data model and to help optimize margins as the retailer grows sales in stores and online.
Generating more than $4 billion in annual sales, Academy Sports + Outdoors operates more than 185 stores in 15 southeastern and midwestern states that are served by two distribution centers. When recent growth outpaced the capabilities of its legacy IT systems, the company launched a two-year project to upgrade the systems that support its merchandising, forecasting, inventory, and financial operations.
Academy Sports + Outdoors chose Oracle Retail solutions to create an IT architecture that could keep pace with the company’s expansion.
The Oracle Retail solutions created an opportunity for Academy Sports + Outdoors to document and streamline legacy system integrations and upgrade processes based on modern best practices. The resulting foundational data model and integration architecture ensures faster adaptability and scalability for the future.
This implementation gives Academy Sports + Outdoors the flexibility to upgrade and add new capabilities more readily, which in turn allows the company to efficiently optimize inventory and margins across regions and channels.
Retailers undergoing a major IT upgrade often feel the need to choose either a phased approach or an all-at-once “big bang” implementation. Academy Sports + Outdoors used elements of both in a three-phase process.
Logic Information Systems and Credo Technology Solutions, both Gold-level members in Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), and Cognizant, a Platinum level member of OPN, all contributed to the implementation and continue to support Academy Sports + Outdoors.
